Mousie Paintings and Other Stuff

I completed some cute mouse paintings as a Christmas present for a gentleman's wife. He was very specific when it came to what he wanted, but I like how they came out and I'm especially happy with how quickly and easily I got them done and off my drawing desk!

On a different work front, I also submitted a painting into the 2012 Tomie dePaola Award through the SCBWI.

Can I just say I'm super happy with this? Pat pat pat myself on the back.

Scott Wills

Recently I've been re-inspired by the artwork of Samurai Jack, so I scooted around the internet picking up information about the background paintings.

Scott Wills is probably the most awesome person in the world. Here is why:

I think my reasoning is pretty clear. I'm awash with amazement at his skill; his contrast, his composition, and his color is great.

Curses Continues

It's been a while since I've last posted, but I'm dropping in to update you all on "Curses!"

One of the last times we met I had just started a spread from Curses. Below you'll see a refresher of where it was, and even further below that you'll see where it's gone so far. Beyond that I'm working on final dummy book sketches, and then I can lay in the story after a final revision. I'm pumped on how this is all turning out.

I also recently finished a new piece that's been posted at http://www.elisawikey.com. Go check it out; it's called "The Sully Sullenberg Effect." Be on the lookout for a brand new pencil piece, too! It's an awesome faux book cover. Someone just has to write the story.

A hoy hoy, everybody. After my last post I figured I need to prove that I'm actually working on things, so here are two progress shots from my ever handy cell phone to show you what I'm doing. One's a painting of Ernest Borgnine, one of the happiest senior citizens I've seen:

I had hoped to have these done by the end of the month, but with this theater production I've been a part of lately, it seems the first part of February would be more reasonable. Either way, Look Ma! I'm making art!

New Year

2010 has come and gone, and I'm okay with that. It was really a year of trying to establish a livable income, having graduated from school. I did some neat stuff, like my solo exhibition of new work at KJ's Coffee Bar in downtown Denver - but I didn't really take off with more new pieces like I wish I had.

This year's going to be different! I'm reviving the yearly planner that helped me be so productive while in school. I've got pieces waiting to be scanned and uploaded here or on my site. I'm signing up for Tumblr to upload sketches I like but that I'll probably never take to finish. And I've even got works in progress on my drawing table, just waiting for me to slap some paint on 'em or sharpen up my pencil and get down to the nitty gritty final.

Being a working stiff smothered a lot of my motivation, but I went to art school because I love being creative and actually MAKING art. So my biggest resolution of 2011 is to MAKE art, instead of just thinking about how I wish I was making art.

Here for your viewing enjoyment is a concept I really hope to see completed come mid-2011. My planner will hold me to it.

From Zero to Hero.

After a complete lack of inspiration or drive to work on new projects over the last few months, I'm jumping in to a full-on project with a brand new character. He's a wizard with an anger problem, and it gets him into all sorts of wacky shenanigans. Here for your viewing pleasure is a quick reference sheet of his three basic emotions - annoyed, extremely frustrated, and vein-popping engraged. He's got a trusty steed who really isn't all that trusty when it comes to punctuality. Let's be honest - his unicorn is really third string on the team of mythical beasts. There was likely some inbreeding when this thing was produced. Plus, bulging eyes and toothpick sized legs don't translate into top odds of winning a survival-of-the-fittest battle royale, but his heart's in the right place.

These are some of the very first sketches so the final looks might get changed up a bit, but I like where they're headed. And these guys are fun to draw so maybe my attention span won't drift away from finishing them up.

I'm still figuring on names, too. Any suggestions I can steal?

Time Management

Finding time for artwork is tough once school is over. I've been thoroughly occupied with these obnoxious things called responsibilities. No one told me I'd have to actually work after graduation. Well, they did tell me - I just stuck my fingers in my ears and went "la-la-la-la-la-la."

Anyway, I apologize for the lack of activity here over the last couple months. I've really gotten to see how hard it can be to balance creating artwork for my eyes and the ability to afford food for my mouth. Eating crow doesn't cut it, either. I've got some ideas brewing and hopefully my drive to doodle to completion will return in the near future. My sketchbook is filling up and I want to show you all some new and exciting finished work before year's end.

Thanks a billion-million-whatever for everyone's support! It keeps gravity at bay.

KJ's Coffee Bar Hosts My Art

This past Saturday morning I stopped in to KJ's Coffee Bar in the Whittier Park neighborhood of Denver to hang my very first show. I had some quick shots taken of the work - thanks to Andy Musser and Erin Donovan for taking those for me! The Big 3-0

In celebration of my 30th blog post, I'm excited to inform you that I've posted a new piece on my website!

It's titled 'Learning By Example' and I must say I'm pleased to be done with it. It's gouache and colored pencil on cardboard. If you've been paying attention, you'll see that this is the second version of the Cannonball Lady piece I started way back in January. I kept pushing that piece back until it became a jumbled mess. Sometimes starting over from scratch is the only way to fix what's wrong!

This took me a little over a week, which is a big difference from my graduation pieces. I think I'm going to stick with this technique for a while because it's a lot faster and tons of fun.

The best part about being happy with the final result means I can move on to the next project I have planned!

A Break From My Norm.

Yesterday I decided to do a quick plein air painting while sitting on my very much out-of-doors balcony. Wild, I know.

I worked on this for about an hour until the light was too far gone. I'm considering reworking it just a smidge by darkening the sky and adding a street lamp that was there for a dusky effect.

My second round of the cannonball lady is coming along nicely, too - it should be finished shortly!

Hey, Remember That Thing I Was Working On?

Well, I'm still working on it, but it looks like I'll have it finished this upcoming weekend (before I go see Conan O'Brien in Boulder on Sunday, of course!)

It's been interesting to work on this project, because I was experimenting with some techniques as I went. This probably did not expedite the process, but now I think my next project should go that much quicker.

I've been busy as a bee lately so I apologize for the long span of no posts! I've been working on a few different projects but they had to be put on hold as I had to move, and I started a fabulous new job at Terry Ludwig Pastels! I get to hand make the most lusciously soft pastels, and every day I'm greeted by thousands of little sticks in over 400 colors. I think I know how it would feel to be a leprechaun - its like going to work inside a rainbow every day, only the gold at the end is deliciously buttery dirt. Better than liquid gold - dusty gold! But I've felt absolutely terrible about not keeping on top of this blog, so I found a little sketch from times past. It's a favorite; maybe one day soon I'll find the time to take it to finish.

Greeting Card Redux

I know it's been a while since my last post, so I think I'll share with you all one of my favorite pieces I did while I was doing some freelance greeting card work. I was really thrilled with how the rocket ship and moon turned out!

I've been working at two part-time jobs which have been keeping me busy, but I'm still setting time aside to work on my art. I'm working on a competition piece, a tee shirt design, another spread from my book, I've got a small show coming up in June, and I've been sketching tons of ideas that I'm really excited to be getting down on paper. Sketchin' From Life

Hello all! I'm back from an extended holiday/post-graduation break. While I was back in California I was spending some time at a casino, but I ended up doing a lot more people-watching than gambling. There was an interesting fellow playing one of the video poker machines, so I took the time to sketch him on a pad of paper from the casino.

I had him sign the sketch after the fact. I also told him I'd be posting this online, so I apologize for how long it took me to make that happen!

Other than that, I'm looking for jobs and freelance opportunities, so wish me luck - my groceries won't last forever!

The fourth annual RMCAD Art Bash took place on Saturday, and it was tons of fun! The Art Bash is a silent auction put on by the Steele Foundation. I've been creating and donating a piece for it since its inception in 2006. This year my piece was titled "Impractical Cave Lighting."

Tee hee! The lamp can actually be turned off and on, too. I was completely surprised to see it go for a whopping $110 after a mini bidding war. How flattering! I hope I continue to be invited to take part, because it's always a blast to create something for the event. If you'd like to see the other canvases that were bid on, check out the Steele Foundation website before it's too late, and stay tuned for what I'm up to next!

Paper means fun for everyone

I've been experimenting lately with cut and torn paper, and earlier this week I had some fun with practicing my paper cutting skills. I made these just for fun in between cutting up paper for a mixed media collage piece I hope to have finished this weekend. Enjoy! Oryx and Crake, and the ADCD Student Show

Hello all!

I'm powering through my last semester here at RMCAD. Only four weeks to go! I finished a piece for my computer illustration class today; it's a cover for Margaret Atwood's novel Oryx and Crake, a disturbingly dystopian story about the end of (most of) humanity.

The creature is a pigoon, part pig and part baboon, raised and harvested for organ transplants. It really is a great book and I highly suggest getting a copy. So, I hope you enjoy my take on the cover art, and I hope you go read the story.

Created in Photoshop. As always, all rights to the illustration (not the title Oryx and Crake, character, or story itself!) are reserved.

Also, I entered a few pieces in the Art Director's Club of Denver (ADCD) Student Show again this year, and I'm extremely excited to say that one of my entries won! My Fairy Tale Road postcards which I've posted on this blog before won Best of Category in one of the graphic design categories. I couldn't be more thrilled! Thank you to the judges of the show who bestowed this award upon my work.

I was playing around with Art Rage today and painted a cookie, at which time I had Mr. Blake Chamness decorate it.

This was followed by Mr. Chamness painting a cookie, leaving me to decorate it in return (that's Blake's color palette smudge up in the corner).

This blog is sorely lacking some sweet sweet eye candy right now, so for absolutely no other reason I will now show you various pieces of artworks and whatnot. Enjoy.

The first is a character design for an ex-military Russian monkey who types angry letters to the editor in his free time. The second piece is the monkey again, and the third piece is the monkey in a more finished illustration. I'm still working on the last one but it doesn't have much farther to go. This pleases me greatly.

My Sincerest Apologies...

...for taking such a ferociously long time to write an update. However, I come to you now with a quick peek at a little sculpture I'm working on to use as a model for the preliminary drawings and eventual paintings I'm creating. I wrote a story meant for a 32 page picture book which is one of the many projects I'm currently working on. The creature's name is Pauhl (the 'h' is silent), and this particular sculpture shows him when he's having a real down day. These are some quick photos from my computer. Enjoy!

Techno-woe.

I have been mighty frustrated the past week or so, for I have learned that I need to purchase a new laptop. The screen on the HP Pavilion I currently have has started blacking out sporadically, and it gets mighty hot. It seems the graphics card is on its last leg, which is supposedly a common problem with this family of laptops.

I am irked!

Other than that, my summer class wrapped up nicely and I'm excited for my last semester to start on August 31st. I've got a lot of swell ideas bubbling around in my noggin. I'll be sure to update once my classes get started to let you all know what projects are written in stone. If all goes to plan I'll hopefully be binding a few books for my grad show. We'll see!

The greeting card job is still going well and, if anything, it's taught me a few more things on simplifying work. It's a lot more enjoyable than editorial work, too! I would suggest greeting card work over editorial work any day.

Hello all! I hope everyone's summer has been going well. The first half of my vacation has been pretty restful. I'm stoked to announce that I am an aunt for the first time ever! My brother is now the proud father of little Amanda. Our entire family couldn't be happier :D !

As for my job hunt, I'm very pleased to be able to let you all know that I started working today as an independent contractor for an online greeting card company. The next few days are going to be super busy as I've got to start and finish a good amount of card illustrations. I think the most difficult thing will be getting back into the swing of sketching A LOT! I've never done illustrations for greeting cards so it'll certainly be interesting to see how my ideas stack up. Wish me all the luck in the world; I'm hoping this arrangement will be a long term thing.

As for the rest of my summer plans, I'm starting the redesign of my website (even though my first design never went live). I'm also sketching ideas for myself, doing a little bit of writing, and looking forward to going to Waterworld for the first time ever! What a fantastic summer!

Working Hard, Hardly Working

This has been quite the summer so far! I've been job hunting, and I picked up a commission which funded a trip to California so I could watch my brother graduate from UCSC. I'm attending one class over the summer. It's my one required math class that I put off as long as possible. I don't enjoy counting. I tried watching the Count on Sesame Street to pump myself up, but his enthusiasm just didn't transfer over.

Now that I'm back from the trip, it's time to get back in the groove. Job hunting is a top priority, and I'm motivated to keep sketching and find more commissions. I'll post some sweet animal sketches I did next time I post here. Until then, I've got to study for a math test.

A brief update: I've been wandering around the Pacific Northwest for the past week and have been really enjoying the change of scenery. The trees here are so gloriously colored! It's been inspiring to my tired eyes, and once I return to Denver I feel a wave of creativity will spill its way onto many sheets of paper. Keep your eyes peeled!

The semester is finally completely over! I had my junior portfolio review today, which went as swimmingly as could be expected. I was told I need to work on keeping my local values more consistent and continue working on my color application. I agree, yey verily! These are certainly things I will focus on this summer. I've a few side projects planned to keep my on my toes.

Other than that, there will be a lot of sleeping, eating, and hopefully some paid work in the cards for these next few months. Oh, and WATERWORLD!!

T-Minus One Week

This spring semester has almost come to an end. Thursday is my last day of classes until the summer semester revs up its engine, and I'm quite excited, yey verily! Once I manage to finish all my final projects and desperately drag myself across the finish line, I'll have to work on re-writing my artist's statement for my portfolio review. This is a far less exciting prospect than finishing the semester.

On another semi-related note, I finished one painting for my Figure Painting 2 class. This is just a photo at the nearly-finished stage. I'm happy with the way it turned out. Please forgive the tilted angle of the picture.

And on one more, still somewhat related note, I'll be sure to post a wonderful announcement here once I launch my very own website that I designed and built myself. Three cheers!

Finished Pieces For Your Approval

Guten Abend!

That's "good evening" in German!

I'm about to dig in to some stovetop stuffing and I thought I might stop by to let you all know how very excited I am about a personal project I'm currently working on. It's actually a collaboration with another illustrator friend of mine, Andy Musser. I don't want to say too much about it, because I want you all to be super surprised when you see it in bookstores everywhere!

See what I did there? I teased you. I dangled some juicy info in front of you.

Now, I'm not saying it's on its way to bookstores this instant. Rather, you being able to see this project in bookstores is the ultimate end goal. Andy and I hope with a little sweat and elbow grease, our book idea will find a publisher willing to take a little gamble on little unknown us. We're currently working on a dummy book and package to send out in hopes of piquing some interest.

Working on a picture book is an interesting process. There's a lot more prep work than some folks might think, and sending it out to publishers is a long process. There's a ton of waiting. Overall though I think the waiting is going to add to the excitement, but talk to me in a few more months and I'm sure I'll say the exact opposite.

Well, I think I've sufficiently and efficiently said a whole lot of nothing in so many words. Come back soon!

Behind the Artwork

Greetings again, my wonderful readers. This semester of school is starting to wrap up with just a few more weeks to go, and I'm working on a few projects at the moment. One of the projects revolves around postcard design. The idea is to choose a foreign country and design three postcards with subject matter appropriate to the country.

My land of choice was Germany - more specifically, German fairy tales. This, of course, is synonymous with the Brothers Grimm. The postcards will be mostly typographic in nature, but each gets a character sketch on the front as well. Here are two of the three:

Here we have the Pied Piper of Hamelin. I like his jaunty feather best.
And here we have Hans from "Hans In Luck." A bold soul, to be sure.

I'm very excited to see the end of this project. It's going to be a lot of fun to finish up, and I'll be sure to post the results for you all to see. 'Til next time!

Sounds Like a Plan... or Something Comparable.

The Girl Scout Motto is "Be Prepared." I find this to be solid advice, so I started thinking about things it would be wise for me to do before my entrance into the 'real world.'

Join the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (www.scbwi.com). This is an indispensable resource. Great for networking, information on publishers, and tips/tricks of the trade. Only $75 to join, too! Now what would I pay?? Well...I guess $75. Definitely something I should not pass up.

Continue working on personal book projects, and start sending materials out to publishers starting this summer. Since it's courteous to allow a publisher a few months to read and review any submissions, it makes sense to start this as soon as possible. Time waits for no illustrator!

Keep building this blog to keep you informed and interested! I want to connect with the world so the people in it can get to know me and my work.

I'll be sure to keep changing and modifying this list as necessary, but I've got high hopes and determination, and I'm excited for what's to come.

My Blogging Journey Begins

Oh hi there!

Here I am, a student of illustration, learning my trade at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. This is all very well and good, and even exciting at times. If all goes to plan I'll be graduating in December of this year, which is frighteningly soon.

In the mean time I'm soaking up my classes and trying my hand at breaking into the highly competitive industry of children's book publishing. Working on story ideas keeps me inspired but classes keep me busy. Such is the life of a college student, no?

So I suppose you might be curious as to what purpose this blog will serve. Well, this blog serves you, of course, by keeping you informed about me! It's a very interesting relationship this blog provides between me and you, wouldn't you agree? In any case, I'll be posting updates on my schooling and personal projects, as well as things of interest I find in regards to children's book writing, illustrating, and publishing.
